The origins of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The Greeks and Romans held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, while the early Christians dedicated the fourth Sunday in Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.

In the United States, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who had been a peace activist and had cared for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Anna Jarvis campaigned for a national day to honor mothers, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day.

In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which falls between March 1st and April 4th. This day is also known as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday was originally a religious holiday that honored the Virgin Mary, but it later became a day for children to visit their mothers and bring them gifts.

During the 19th century, Mothering Sunday became less popular, but it was revived in the 20th century as a secular holiday. Today, Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the UK with cards, flowers, and gifts, much like Mother’s Day in the United States.
